"I generally prefer not to include any symphony orchestra or Hollywood studio recording activities in my personal discography; however, the Revueltas CD occupies a special place in my cumulative work as a trumpet player, and I was the only member of the organization, save for Esa-Pekka, who participated in the recording of every piece. Three grueling sessions over 1 1/2 days, beginning with the large orchestra works and then proceeding downwards incrementally to the smallest work, which called for only five players, with some of the works being played by the group(s) for the very first time during those sessions. As we approached the final pieces, I experienced the same feeling I do nearing the end of a 10K run-hoping I will make it to the finish. Indeed, during the handful of minutes it took for the chairs and music stands to be set up for the final small group pieces, E.P. and I were so exhausted that we did not move from our positions-we simply studied our music and waited for the next group to assemble! The fact I was able to successfully avoid disaster during the project remains one of my proudest moments as a musician-never mind that the personnel shown in the photo of the New Music Group displayed on the inside cover of the CD liner notes were not the musicians who actually performed the ensemble pieces on the recording (see Quotables, general quotes, #36-one just has to love the record companies). And for those who admired the Latin-American compositions Johnny Richards did for Stan Kenton during the 1950s-60s, Revueltas' writing, as heard on this CD, will be of some revelatory interest." -Tom Stevens
